Norway is ready to recognize the Palestinian state

On Friday, April 12, Norway said that it is ready to recognize the Palestinian state together with other countries.

Norway’s Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Storr has said this during a meeting with his Spanish counterpart Pedro Sanchez in the capital Oslo. Sanchez is trying to expand support for the recognition of a Palestinian state.

Storr told reporters that the decision would require close coordination with “like-minded countries.”

“Norway is ready to recognize the Palestinian state… we have not set a timetable yet,” he told a joint news conference with Sanchez.

In November, Norway’s parliament approved the government’s proposal that the country prepare to recognize an independent Palestinian state.

Norway hosted the Israeli-Palestinian peace talks in the early 1990s, which resulted in the Oslo Accords.

According to a Spanish government spokesman, Sanchez is currently on a trip to Poland, Norway and Ireland to drum up support for the recognition of a Palestinian state.

Speaking to Storr, Sánchez said Spain is committed to “recognizing Palestine as a state as soon as possible with the right conditions, in a way that will have a very positive impact on the peace process.”

On March 22, Spain issued a joint statement with Ireland, Malta and Slovenia on the sidelines of the EU leaders’ meeting, saying they were “ready to recognize Palestine under appropriate conditions.”

Sanchez told reporters during a trip to the Middle East last week that he expects the move to be implemented by the end of June.

Norway’s prime minister said on Friday that he welcomed the consultations to “strengthen harmony” between the countries at the initiative of Sanchez.

“We will be accelerating this coordination in the coming weeks,” Storr said.

Since the beginning of the war between Israel and Hamas, the Prime Minister of Spain has angered Israel with his comments.

The war in the Gaza Strip began after Hamas militants launched an unprecedented attack on Israel on October 7, killing 1,170 people, mostly civilians, according to Israeli officials.

According to the Hamas-controlled Health Ministry in Gaza, at least 3,3634 Palestinians, mostly women and children, have been killed in Israel’s retaliatory attacks.
