North Korean media reports “Multiple warhead missile separation and guidance test successfully conducted”

North Korea revealed yesterday that it had successfully conducted a technology test to equip a medium- to long-range ballistic missile with multiple warheads.

North Korea’s Korean Central News Agency reported this morning that “the General Missile Administration conducted a successful individual maneuvering warhead separation and guidance control test on the 26th.”

The test involved a solid-fuel medium- to long-range ballistic missile equipped with multiple warheads, and the separated warheads were reportedly accurately guided to three set target points.

Regarding the purpose of the test, the statement said, “The purpose is to ensure the ability to strike multiple targets using multiple warheads,” and emphasized that it is “part of the normal activities of the Missile Directorate and its affiliated Institute of Defense Science, which aim to technologically advance weapons systems.”

South Korea’s military announced that North Korea launched a ballistic missile toward the Sea of Japan from near the capital, Pyongyang, at around 5:30 a.m. yesterday, but that the launch appears to have failed.
