[April19KOREAWAVE]According to Korea’s National Statistics Office/National Statistics Portal, the consumer price index for seaweed rolls rose to 125.90 last year. If the price in 2020 is 100, it means that the price has increased by 25% in three years.
The rise in the price of seaweed rolls is hitting the pockets of ordinary people directly. A 30-year-old office worker said, “Recently, if I bought five tuna norimaki rolls in Gangnam, it cost 25,000 won (1 won = about 0.11 yen). There was a time when one roll cost 1,000 won, but prices have gone down. It has risen too much,” he said.
Owners of flour food stores are sighing as prices rise through the roof. The manager (67), who has been in business for 30 years, said, “The last time we raised the price was two years ago, when we raised the price by 500 won.We live in a lot of neighborhoods, so we can’t just raise prices just because prices have gone up.” ” he lamented.
Until last year, the company owner used to buy high-quality glue for 100 sheets for 8,000 to 9,000 won, but this month the price rose to 15,000 won. The manager said, “This year, we exported a lot of frozen seaweed rolls, so it was difficult to get seaweed. We also ran out of seaweed powder to put on things like kamaboko, so we haven’t been able to buy it since the beginning of last week.”
