NHL Panthers win first Stanley Cup in 30th season

The seventh game of the Stanley Cup Finals (best of seven), which determines the champion of North American professional ice hockey NHL, was held on the 24th in Sunrise, Florida, with the Eastern Conference champions Panthers beating the Western Conference champions Oilers 2-1 to bring their series record to 4 wins and 3 losses, and win their first championship in their 30th season in the league.

The Panthers held on to their one-point lead at 1-1 in the second period. This was their third time in two consecutive seasons to advance to the Stanley Cup Finals.

The Oilers failed to become the second team in history to make a major comeback from a 0-3 deficit to win the championship. Captain McDavid was named the playoff MVP. He is the sixth player in history to be selected from a team that failed to win the championship. (Kyodo News)
