Microsoft re-adjusted its registration process for online services in February 2025. According to a message on the Support page of the technology company Users will remain registered automatically in the future. So far, the users either had to check themselves or were explicitly asked whether they would like to remain registered.

The change applies to all online services from Microsoft that run via the web browser, such as Outlook, MSN or Office 365. “From February 2025, they will be automatically registered unless you can contact or use private browsers In addition on the Microsoft Support page. This is practical if you only use your own device – but it can be dangerous on foreign laptops, tablets or smartphones.

Microsoft change: A forgetfulness can endanger your data

If you use a public PC or borrow a device from friends, you will have to think about logging off in the future. Alternatively, Microsoft advises to use private browser mode because it does not save any registration data. As a result, others cannot access your Microsoft account afterwards, your browser or search process. Depending on the browser, you have to select the following in the menu:

• Microsoft Edge: “New Inprepervate window”
• Google Chrome: “New incognito window”
• Mozilla Firefox: “New private window”
• Opera: “New private window”

However, it can be assumed that not every user thinks of one of these options. If necessary, you can also unscrew yourself centrally via your Microsoft account on all devices, browsers and applications. To do this, you have to register in the dashboard of your Microsoft account in the extended security options and there. If you scroll down, you will find the “Log off” option. If you select this, you will be deregistered anywhere – but this can take up to 24 hours. In addition, the function does not apply to Xbox consoles.
