Shopping on the Internet is becoming increasingly popular in Germany – across all age groups. A good 83 percent of 16 to 74 year olds in this country say they have already ordered goods or services online, according to figures from the Federal Statistical Office. That corresponds to almost 52 million people. In the previous survey by Wiesbaden statisticians on this topic in 2021, 80 percent said they had already shopped online.
The proportion of online shoppers is still highest among 25 to 54 year olds at around 90 percent. According to the information, it is around 85 percent of 16 to 24 year olds. The proportion is lowest among 55 to 74 year olds at 73 percent, although they saw the strongest growth: in 2021, around 66 percent of this age group said they had ever bought something online.
Almost every second online shopper (48 percent) ends up adding clothes and shoes to their digital shopping cart. Films, series or music are also often ordered online (40 percent). More and more often on the shopping list on the Internet: food, drinks, drugstore products or pet food. 29 percent of 16 to 74 year olds purchased such goods online in the three months before the survey; in 2021 the figure was 22 percent. Many people also like to buy books, newspapers or magazines (27 percent) as well as tickets (26 percent) on the Internet with a mouse click.
