Motorola used to be one of the largest cell phone manufacturers in the world. Just like Nokia and other traditional companies, the smartphone era has set the company back. All that remains are the names that are now under different management. In Motorola’s case, that is Lenovo – and the company wants to bring the legendary brand back to the top.

Lenovo has held the reins at Motorola for many years. The Chinese company has shown time and again, especially in the last one or two years, that smartphones can play at the top. But Motorola has not really prevailed. That is set to change. According to GizmoChina has Lenovo has launched the “Gladiator Project” for Motorola. It has the following tasks:

1. Instead of concentrating primarily on Latin America and North America outside of China, Motorola wants to become successful globally.
2. The focus will be on high-end smartphones such as the Razr and Edge series. In addition, collaborations with Pantone and Bose are intended to appeal to Gen Z and B2B partners.
3. As with all other companies, artificial intelligence is set to play a much larger role. This will enable Motorola to keep up with the big players in the market who are already much further ahead in this area.

Lenovo’s goal is to Motorola will become the world’s third largest smartphone manufacturer in the next three years. Xiaomi is currently in the top spot. Then come Apple and Samsung. But the positions fluctuate from time to time. Last year, Apple was in the lead. It is clear that Motorola wants to return to its former strength.

This is not the first time that a Chinese company has tried to conquer the smartphone market. Xiaomi had planned to take first place within a few years. But that hasn’t happened. Will Motorola make it into the top 3? That remains to be seen in the coming years. Samsung, Apple and Xiaomi will certainly not accept that so easily. However, Huawei has shown that the three manufacturers are not untouchable.
