The Norwegian had lost consciousness and, after receiving first aid on the track, was taken to the Bufalini Trauma Centre in Cesena for further treatment. There, Rusthen was put into an artificial coma and operated on on Saturday.
“She underwent surgery to relieve the pressure in her head and to stop a hemorrhage,” her family said in an initial update. “The doctor is very positive and happy with the outcome. The pressure in her brain is stable and her vital signs are stable.”
The 22-year-old is still in an artificial coma in the intensive care unit at Bufalini Hospital. Another update from her family late Monday evening gives cause for hope, as Rusthen is no longer in danger of dying.
“She has her loved ones around her. That gives her and us as a family strength,” her family writes on Facebook“Mia is still in a coma, but doctors report that fortunately her life is no longer in danger.”
“She is stable and shows good vital signs. We are now working on a plan to transfer her home to a hospital in Norway as soon as she is stable enough for air transport. It is too early to say anything concrete.”
“But we hope that her good physical condition and her tenacity will help her to get through this too.” The family would also like to thank the global motorsport community for their great support.
Rusthen started her racing career in 2016 and drove her first season in Norwegian junior cups in 2017. In 2018, she was invited to the selection for the Red Bull Rookies Cup, but did not make it into the field of participants.
In 2021, she made the step into international racing and competed in the IDM Supersport 300 class. She was supported by Yamaha. In 2022, Rusthen collected her first IDM points. In 2023, she competed in the Women’s European Championship, which she finished in tenth place.
