The company Meta said on Thursday, February 8 (19 days) that it deleted the Facebook and Instagram accounts of Ali Khamenei, the leader of Iran.
Mita called the move a “violation of policy content”.
Spokesperson Mita told AFP: “We deleted these accounts because they were more dangerous than our policy regarding organizations and individuals.”
But he did not say anything about the Hamas-Israeli war. This company was under pressure to delete the accounts of the leader of Iran since the beginning of the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7th.
After that attack, Khamenei expressed his support for the deadly attack by Hamas, but said that Iran was not involved in that attack.
Khamenei has also publicly supported Israel’s retaliatory bombing of Gaza and Houthi rebels’ attacks on ships in the Red Sea.
Ali Khamenei, who has been in power in Iran for 35 years, has five million followers on Instagram.
According to the policy, Mita has made this decision based on this: “We will not allow organizations or individuals who declare a violent mission or are involved in violence to be present in our schools.”
This policy also states that messages containing “respect, support and representation of various dangerous organizations and individuals will be deleted”.
The United States has designated Hamas as a terrorist organization.
The use of Facebook and Instagram is prohibited in Iran, but Iranians avoid using virtual private networks (VPN) and use restricted websites and applications such as Facebook, X and YouTube.
