Mehbub’s ‘PDP’ kingmaker in Jammu and Kashmir?

Mehbub’s ‘PDP’ kingmaker in Jammu and Kashmir?

Refer Report

Srinagar : Party surveyor Omar Abdullah has made a serious allegation that BJP has fielded an army of independent candidates in the elections to reduce the seats of the ‘National Conference’. If this allegation against BJP is true, Mehbooba Mufti’s People’s Democratic Party (PDP) is expected to become the kingmaker in forming the government of Jammu and Kashmir.

In the Kashmir Valley, people are again looking forward to the ‘National Conference’. But, many small parties and independents like non-existent Rashtriya Lok Jan Shakti etc. have started standing in the valley to trouble this major regional party. Abdullah claimed that the main objective of these parties and candidates is to defeat the ‘National Conference’ (NC). If the ‘NC’-Congress does not get a majority in this hurdle race, the alternative alliance will gain importance in forming the government. In that case neither BJP nor NC-Congress alliance will be able to form the government without PDP! That is why it is believed that the ‘PDP’ is eagerly waiting for the government to be formed.

Anantnag in South Kashmir is the stronghold of ‘PDP’ and his daughter Iltija is contesting for the first time from Bijbehra constituency here instead of Mehbooba Mufti. Iltija is seen as the successor of former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir Mufti Mohammad Saeed. Although it is true that Iltija can be elected, it seems that ‘PDP’ will have to settle for 8-10 seats only. ‘Our party is small and we will get the same number of seats. “We are not claimants of power,” confessed Mufti’s confidant and PDP spokesperson Najmu Saqib.

In 2014, PDP won 28 seats by campaigning against BJP. But, after the result, ‘PDP’ joined hands with BJP and established power in Jammu and Kashmir. Four years later, the PDP-BJP government collapsed in 2018 due to differences. People’s anger against ‘PDP’ for going with BJP for power is still not gone. Moreover, Altaf Bukhari formed ‘Apni Party’ after a vertical split in ‘PDP’. So ‘PDP’ has become weak. It was being discussed that the hand of BJP was also behind this split. It is said that the ‘PDP’ will somehow achieve a decade of seats as it is likely that the ‘PDP’ will be hit hard by the alliance with the BJP. But, BJP is believed to have increased the importance of ‘PDP’ in the game of blocking the ‘National Conference’. That’s why, ‘we are sitting on the fence and watching the fun’, Saqib gave a poignant reaction. If the ‘NC’-Congress alliance does not get a majority, Omar Abdullah-Rahul Gandhi will have to request the support of Mehbooba Mufti as a constituent party of the ‘India’ alliance to form the government and keep the BJP out of power. On the other hand, even if the BJP decides to form the government with smaller parties and independents, this post-result alliance will need the support of the PDP. That is why ‘PDP’ has started dreaming of becoming the kingmaker in Jammu and Kashmir without majority. (respectively)
