Masuo’s unexpected nightmare

A small glimpse of his true nature was given in the episode “People You Can’t Trust” of the animated series “Sazae-san” (Fuji TV), which aired on May 26th.

Masuo often forgets things Sazae asks him to do, which troubles Sazae. The other day, she asked him to repair the back door, but there was no sign of him doing it. But there was a reason for this. When Masuo tried to repair it, Namihei said he would do it, so he left it to her, and in fact Namihei had just forgotten.

Although the misunderstanding was cleared up, Masuo was questioned so harshly by Sazae that he was dejected and said, “It seems like Sazae doesn’t trust me.”

One day, Sazae asks Masuo to lend her the mystery novel he is reading when he finishes it. However, Masuo’s response is somewhat absent-minded. Sazae worries, “I wonder if he is listening properly…”

His premonition turns out to be correct. Having forgotten his promise to Sazae, Masuo lends the mystery novel he has just finished to his colleague, Anago-san. Sazae loses patience with Masuo, saying, “That’s enough, I don’t rely on you anymore.”

That night, Masuo has a dream. He dreams that Sazae and Masuo are being chased by a lion in a grassland. Masuo uses a log that serves as a bridge to cross the river, but even though Sazae is still on the other side, he removes the log, preventing the lion from crossing the river with her. Feeling guilty for having had such a terrible dream in which he abandoned his wife, Masuo frantically cleans the house that morning.

This episode revealed many surprising aspects of Maso’s true nature, who was thought to be a reliable person, and people on social media have been saying things like, “Maso, that was an amazing dream!”, “Even though it was a dream, I want to add this to Maso’s outlaw legend,” and “Even though it was a dream, Maso is a total bastard lol.”
