Manipur burns; March turned violent, 40 students injured; Curfew in three districts

Tuesday in Manipur As the protest by the students at the Raj Bhavan turned violent, the police resorted to batons and tear gas. At least 40 students have been injured. On the other hand, a woman was killed in a shootout between two armed groups in Kangpoki district, adding to the tension. In the remote village of Thangbu, the villagers have to flee the village after the mob burnt down some houses. Meanwhile, curfew has been imposed in three districts in the wake of violence.

A new chapter of Kuki and Maitei conflict has started in Manipur and this time drones, advanced missiles etc. are being attacked. The police have also admitted that some fragments of the missile have been found. Retired Director General of Assam Rifles General P.C. Nair said that no rockets or drones were used in the attack, but Manipur Director General of Police (Administration) K. Jayant Singh rejected this claim saying that there is evidence of use of sophisticated weapons.

Meanwhile, on Tuesday, protesting students who went to Raj Bhavan for their various demands clashed with the security forces. At least 40 students were injured. The students are demanding the removal of the Director General of Police as well as the security adviser of the state government. Protesters shouted slogans and threw stones at the security guards. The jawans used tear gas to disperse the crowd. Manipur University students also protested. At Thongbal, protesters attempted to march on the district police headquarters. This time the crowd turned violent. Damaged some vehicles in the court premises. Stones were pelted on the ambulance carrying the injured.

school, Colleges closed

The state education department has decided to keep all schools and colleges in Manipur closed today and tomorrow. It is seen that a large number of students also participated in the protest this time. Against this backdrop, all educational institutions will be closed for two days to prevent any untoward incident from happening in schools, colleges and universities.

Order confusion regarding internet ban

In the wake of rising violence, the state’s home department had ordered a five-day internet shutdown across Manipur. But the government changed the order late at night and clarified that the ban is limited to five districts namely East, West Imphal, Thoubal, Bishnupur and Kakching. This care has been taken to prevent various photographs as well as promotional speeches and tapes being sent from social media.
