The fish stove becomes a kiln, where works of memory from the past are fired. (Provided by Penghu County Government Cultural Bureau)
The Cultural Bureau of the Penghu County Government stated that the Huazhai settlement is one of the relatively well-preserved traditional settlements in the Penghu area. There were approximately 47 fish stoves during its peak period. Nowadays, the industry of using fish stoves as a fish processing industry has declined. I am very pleased that Tutu Experimental Studio has transformed an idle fish stove into a kiln stove, and led residents to experience creation together, jointly explore the region and customs of Wang’an, and re-understand the relationship between themselves and the land.
The Soil Experiment Studio stated that in 2023, the studio will begin to conduct material experiments with soil from various parts of Wangan Island. Through co-creation with residents, they will collect soil, sift soil, refine soil, knead molding, and wild-fire to re-establish and recover. residents’ memories of the land. This year, the team came to Wang’an with the art-turning community project and discussed with Mr. Zheng Zhonghe, a senior kiln maker and kiln maker. They used the restored fish stove on the island, which has fire resistance and ventilation characteristics, to fire clay, and the results were quite successful. This exhibition uses clay materials and fish stoves as kilns, which is truly “Made in Penghu”.
