“New Work: Kunisada Chuji” (included in Jump Comics Volume 8)
This time, we will be bringing you the story of Ryo-san and the other members of the police box taking on a popular theater production.
The play was based on a suggestion from Ryo-san and was about Kunisada Chuji. Chuji was a gangster from the late Edo period, originally from Kunisadamura, Saigun, Kozuke (now Isesaki City). During the Tenpo famine, he used his own money to save the common people, and as a rebellious man who continued to defy the corrupt government, he is a character who enjoys unwavering popularity in popular theater, movies, storytelling, and rakugo.
They are known for their famous phrase, “Tonight is the last night of Mount Akagi…”, which is said to have been uttered while they were holed up in Mount Akagi in Gunma Prefecture after being chased by government officials. However, in modern times, they are often considered to be anti-social groups that repeatedly fought privately over territory.
Even so, Ryo-san and the others are both active police officers. Even if they are popular with the elderly, it seems a little unlikely that they would play the role of “Kunisada Chuji,” who regards a yakuza as a hero, and that police officers would compete for the role. In Ryo-san’s case, his intimidating appearance is a perfect fit for the role of a yakuza…
