RICHMOND, Virginia ∙ Kannan Srinivasan and JJ Singh won Virginia’s legislative special elections that drew state and national attention. While Srinivasan bagged the open Senate District 32 seat, Singh won the House District 26 race. Both wins ensure that Democrats can maintain a narrow majority in both chambers of the Virginia General Assembly.
The party maintains what it sees as a counterbalance to Republican power in Washington and advances its legislative agenda.
Srinivasan, a former Loudoun County representative, thanked the voters. JJ Singh, the son of Indian immigrants, also celebrated victory in the House race.
Srinivasan and Singh won 61% of the vote, cementing their positions in two historically Democratic districts. Virginia Democratic Party Chairwoman Susan Swecker wins Celebrated, Srinivasan, who immigrated to the US from India in 1992 and previously served in the House of Representatives, is running for the state Senate in 2024 after his predecessor, Suhas Subramaniam, was elected to Congress.
Subramanian expressed confidence in their future efforts knowing that Kannan and JJ will continue to fight for Loudoun families and work to reduce costs, protect reproductive freedom and combat the rise in gun violence.
