Diesel car drivers were able to benefit from the lowest fuel prices of the year in July. This is the result of the monthly ADAC analysis of fuel prices for July 2024. According to this, the average price of diesel fuel at German petrol stations was never lower than in the previous month in any other month of the year. A liter of diesel cost an average of 1.652 euros, 0.5 cents less than in June.
The price of Super E10 also fell in July compared to the previous month. According to ADAC, the average price was 1.769 euros, compared to 1.776 euros in June. However, drivers of petrol cars had to pay the least in January 2024, with a monthly average of 1.732 euros per litre of Super E10.
The end of the month was also pleasing for diesel drivers: on July 31, diesel cost an average of 1.619 euros per day – this was not only the cheapest day of the month, but of the entire year 2024 so far. The most expensive day for diesel drivers was July 3, at 1.687 euros. Super E10 was cheapest on July 24, at 1.747 euros, and most expensive on July 7, at 1.790 euros.
The drop in prices at the pumps was largely due to the fall in crude oil prices over the course of the month. At the beginning of July, the price of a barrel of Brent crude oil was temporarily over 87 US dollars, but towards the end of the month, a barrel cost only around 78 dollars.
Drivers can save a lot of money when filling up if they follow a few rules. For example, you should fill up in the evening. An ADAC analysis of fuel prices in May shows that prices are lowest between 7 and 8 p.m. and between 9 and 10 p.m. At 7 a.m., however, fuel prices are six to seven cents higher. Consumers should also compare the prices of the various petrol stations before filling up and, if possible, head for the cheapest station. You should also avoid motorway petrol stations – these charge an average of 40 cents more per litre.
Drivers can get quick and practical help with the “ADAC Drive App”, which provides the prices of almost all of the more than 14,000 petrol stations in Germany. Detailed information on the fuel market and current prices is also available at www.adac.de/tanken.
