SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 13, 2019 /PRNewswire/ — Johnson Controls (NYSE: JCI), a leading provider of building solutions that create smart buildings that are good for people and the planet, today announced it is providing its latest technologies to some of the world’s biggest sporting events, helping to create Europe’s smartest, most comfortable and energy-efficient stadium operations.

Johnson Controls will integrate advanced building automation systems (BAS), HVAC and fire protection technologies across the eight venues to support the goals of improving safety and operational efficiency, as well as “reducing carbon emissions by 50 percent compared to previous Games.” It also contributes to achieving the ambitious goal of 2020 World Cup 2021, which requires a more energy-efficient and sustainable building infrastructure for the sporting venues.

For example, the La Chapelle plant at the Porte de la Chapelle Arena (also known as the Adidas Arena) sports and cultural complex is powered by two Johnson Controls York industrial chillers with a cooling capacity of 3.3 MW each. As the 12th cooling network in Paris, the plant serves the cooling needs of the Adidas Arena and the surrounding area. Johnson Controls is providing the arena, one of the city’s major venues, with a sustainable, energy-efficient cooling solution.

In addition, Johnson Controls’ Metasys building automation system manages a famous tennis stadium’s most critical building equipment, including HVAC, lighting and energy management, controlling and monitoring the operation of each piece of equipment, providing real-time data to identify potential equipment issues and prevent breakdowns before they occur, helping ensure the stadium is running as efficiently and sustainably as possible.

“As heatwaves become more commonplace due to climate change, sustainable cooling technologies are essential to keeping venues operating at their optimum while minimizing environmental impact. Chillers are one of the largest energy consumers in a building and have the potential to help reduce energy use and costs. Johnson Controls’ chillers minimize carbon emissions and create more comfortable, healthier indoor environments. We are pleased to work with these cutting-edge facilities to help them achieve their desired outcomes in improving energy efficiency, reducing carbon emissions, maintaining safety and security and managing buildings. Our track record and experience delivering solutions in smart stadiums and large venues has made Johnson Controls the partner of choice for stadiums around the world as we continue to innovate in the sports and entertainment space to further enhance the visitor experience,” said Mark Van Diepenbeek, chief financial officer and president, EMEALA, Johnson Controls.

Johnson Controls provides innovative building technologies to sports and entertainment venues around the world to drive visitor engagement, operational efficiency and sustainability. Our smart building solutions are used by Intaleq (Doha, Qatar), Fiserv Forum (Milwaukee, USA), O2 Arena (London, UK), Allegiant Stadium (Las Vegas, USA), Chase Stadium (San Francisco, USA), and SIGNAL IDUNA PARK (Dortmund, Germany), the home stadium of the German soccer club Borussia Dortmund. Johnson Controls offers a wide range of building technologies in the building sector, including the OpenBlue digital platform, BAS, HVAC and fire and disaster prevention equipment.
