The Japanese Olympic Committee (JOC) will hold a medal ceremony for Shoma Uno (26), who won a silver medal in the figure skating team at the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics but was unable to attend the medal ceremony held in Paris this summer. According to a person involved, the JOC is considering holding the ceremony in Tokyo on the 10th, and is also arranging for Shoma Uno to attend.
The awards ceremony in Beijing for the team medals was postponed due to a doping issue involving Kamila Valieva of the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC), who was ranked first at the time. The rankings were reviewed by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), and it was decided that the United States, which was ranked second in July this year, would take first place, and Japan, which was ranked third, would move up to second place. In response to this, the ceremony was held on August 7th during the Paris Olympics, but Uno was unable to attend due to scheduling difficulties, including an overlap with rehearsals for an ice show in Switzerland.
Uno, who retired from competitive skating in May this year, won a silver medal in the men’s event at the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympics and a bronze medal in the men’s event at the 2022 Beijing Olympics. His total of three Olympic medals, including the team silver medal, is the most ever for Japan in figure skating, both male and female.
