(Bloomberg):Israel has sealed off areas along its border with Lebanon in preparation for an imminent ground attack on the pro-Iranian militia Hezbollah. It appears to be ignoring the growing calls from the international community for restraint.
The expected future attacks will further expand attacks on Hezbollah. Israel killed Hezbollah leader Nasrallah on September 27, despite calls for a ceasefire from the United States, the European Union (EU), and Arab countries. Israel has shifted its focus to Lebanon as its war with the Islamic group Hamas in the Palestinian autonomous region of Gaza reaches a stalemate.
The US government expects Israel to make a limited ground invasion of Lebanon, but has warned Netanyahu’s government against launching a large-scale, long-term operation that could lead to direct confrontation with Iran. A U.S. government official with knowledge of the matter made the statement on condition of anonymity.
Israel has carried out large-scale airstrikes against Lebanon over the past week. On the 30th, they attacked the center of the capital, Beirut. Israel, which has sent small special forces forces across the border in recent months, has signaled it is willing to send more ground forces, including tanks, into southern Lebanon.
Israeli Defense Minister Gallant told tank crews deployed along the border on the 30th that the killing of Nasrallah was not the final step in the fight against Hezbollah, adding: “We will use all the capabilities available at our discretion.” I will,” he said.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said the goal of destroying Hezbollah is to end its rocket attacks and end the situation that has forced tens of thousands of Israelis to flee northern Israel.
The Biden administration has tried to persuade Israel not to launch a large-scale operation, said the official, who asked not to be identified discussing private discussions. Instead, Israel says it will carry out targeted attacks focused on eliminating Hezbollah infrastructure from the country’s border with Lebanon.
Meanwhile, Nasrallah’s aide Naim Qassem said on the 30th that preparations for ground combat were in place.
