An Israeli soldier is said to have mistreated Palestinian prisoners. The military wants to take tough action in light of increasing reports about the situation of prisoners.
Israel’s military prosecutor has filed charges against a soldier for the alleged mistreatment of Palestinian prisoners. He is accused of having used “serious violence against the prisoners entrusted to him” when securing transports of so-called security prisoners to Israeli prisons between February and June of this year, according to the Israeli military.
According to army reports, during some of the transports the reservist is said to have beaten the prisoners, even though they posed no danger and were handcuffed and blindfolded. He is said to have beaten the prisoners with a club and his personal weapon and filmed the action with his mobile phone.
There are repeated reports of poor conditions for Palestinian prisoners in Israeli custody. Israeli military police arrested nine soldiers on Monday at the Sde Teiman military base near the desert city of Beersheba for allegedly sexually abusing a terrorist from the Islamist terrorist organization Hamas so severely that he had to be taken to hospital with injuries.
After the soldiers were arrested, there were massive riots in Israel. Immediately after the arrest, angry demonstrators entered the camp to protest. Protests also took place in other places, such as the Beit Lid military base northeast of Tel Aviv, in which right-wing extremist MPs were also involved. Relatives of the soldiers called for further protests and denied the accusations against them.
