Tel Aviv: More information about the attack is emerging after Israel killed Hassan Nasrullah, the long-time head of the secretive Hezbollah. The new revelation is that Israeli intelligence had received information about Hassan Nasrullah’s whereabouts months ago. This is reported by The New York Times citing three Israeli officials.

The decision to kill Nasrallah was reached only a few days ago, despite receiving the information. Israel’s Channel 12 reports that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, ministers and defense officials held several days of consultations on the assassination plan. Some cabinet ministers, including Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, opposed the move. Smotrich and Regional Cooperation Minister David Amsalem shared concerns that this would harm Israel’s operations in Gaza.

The unnamed officials say that Israel did not even inform the United States that it had finally decided to kill Nasrullah. The operation to kill Nasrullah was planned before Netanyahu left for New York on Thursday morning to address the UN General Assembly. Netanyahu approved the attack shortly before his speech at the U.N. on Friday. The Minister of Defense also supported the decision which was approved in principle by the cabinet meeting.

The move began a few minutes after Netanyahu’s speech on Friday evening. The US was informed only after the fighter jets took off and the operation began.

Hezbollah’s headquarters in Dahiya, south of the Lebanese capital, Beirut. Within seconds, more than 80 bunker busting bombs with the power to destroy the underground chambers were dropped on the place where the information was received. Six buildings were reduced to ashes.

Then the Israeli army announced that Nasrullah had been killed through social media. However, Hezbollah leadership confirmed Nasrullah’s death only on Saturday morning. Nasrullah’s supposed successor, Hashim Safiuddin, was not in the bunker at the time.
