Western countries and the United Nations have condemned Iran’s attacks on Israel and warned that these attacks are a threat to intensifying instability in the Middle East.
In response to Israel’s attack on the consulate in Syria, Iran launched its retaliatory attacks late Saturday by firing missiles and launching drones from its own territory towards Israel.
United Nations
Antonio Guterres, the Secretary General of the United Nations, called for an immediate end to the conflict in the Middle East.
Guterres wrote in a statement: “I strongly condemn the escalation of tension caused by the massive attack that the Islamic Republic of Iran carried out on Israel today.”
He added: “I am deeply concerned about the real danger of a destructive escalation of tension in the region. I ask all parties to exercise maximum restraint in order to avoid any action that could lead to major military conflicts on several fronts in the Middle East. I have repeatedly emphasized that neither the region nor the world can withstand another war.
United States
Adrian Watson, spokesman for the White House National Security Council, issued a statement emphasizing the support of the President of the United States for Israel.
The White House statement said that the United States “will stand by the people of Israel and support their defense against these threats from Iran.”
The statement said: “President Biden has clearly stated that his support for the security of Israel is iron.”
At the same time, Josep Borrell, the head of foreign policy of the European Union, called Iran’s attack on Israel “unprecedented violence and a serious threat to the security of the region” and condemned it.
British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak condemned Iran’s “brazen” drone and missile attack on Israel and said that Britain “will continue to defend Israel’s security”.
Sonak said in a statement: “Besides our allies, we are working immediately to stabilize the situation and prevent escalation. No one wants to witness more bloodshed.”
France
French Foreign Minister Stephen Sjourn called Iran’s attack on Israel a “new level” of security threats and condemned it.
Emphasizing France’s commitment to Israel’s security, Sojourn added: “By deciding to take this unprecedented step, Iran will reach a new level of instability and is at risk of escalating military tensions.”
Germany
German Foreign Minister Annalina Bierbuch wrote on Sunday morning on the X channel that Germany “will condemn the ongoing attack in the strongest possible terms if it can plunge the entire region into chaos.”
Beerbok said: “Iran and its proxies must stop it immediately. We offer our full solidarity to Israel at this time.”
Canada
Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of Canada, said that Kishoresh “will clearly condemn Iran’s airstrikes against Israel.”
Trudeau said in a statement: “We are on the side of Israel. After supporting the brutal attack by Hamas on October 7, the latest actions of the Iranian regime will destabilize the region and make it more difficult to maintain peace.”
He added: “We support the right of Israel to defend itself and its people against these attacks.”
Italy
Antonio Tajani, the Italian Foreign Minister, said that he was following the situation “with attention and monitoring” “The prepared management is for any kind of scenario”.
Iran has said that these attacks were carried out in response to Israel’s attack on its consulate in Syria. If Israel continues such attacks, Tehran’s response will be more severe.
Israel has not yet claimed responsibility for the attack on the Iranian consulate in which two senior commanders of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps were killed.
