Pakistan’s former Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi were sentenced to 14 years in prison on Wednesday, January 31 (11th century) in a corruption case.
Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi have been accused of corruption in a case related to receiving gifts during the reign of Imran Khan. A day before this, Imran Khan was sentenced to 10 years in prison in the case of disclosure of confidential government documents.
This punishment was given to Imran Khan and his wife while there is a week left for the general elections in Pakistan and the participation of his Tehreek-e-Insaf Party in these elections has been limited.
A spokesperson of the party told the media: “It is another sad day in the history of our judicial system, that this system is being destroyed.”
It is not immediately clear whether Imran Khan’s two prison sentences will be served consecutively or concurrently.
Imran Khan was sentenced in Adiala jail where he has been incarcerated since his arrest in August. His Tehreek-e-Insaf deputy Shah Mehmood Qureshi was also sentenced to 10 years in prison in the case of disclosure of confidential government documents.
Qureshi is also currently imprisoned in Adiala prison.
One of Imran Khan’s lawyers, Intizar Hussain Panjota, said that Imran Khan’s wife, whose name was included in the corruption case from the beginning, has surrendered herself to the security authorities.
Who is Bushra Bibi?
Bashara Bibi married Imran Khan in 2018, a few months before he became Prime Minister.
She is a religious teacher and after she got married to Imran Khan, he asked her for religious guidance and advice.
Bushra Bibi wears hijab and does not appear in public much.
It has been decided that 127 million Pakistanis will participate in the country’s elections on Thursday. Although Imran Khan’s party has been sidelined in these elections, it is in the midst of election campaigns and debates.
At least four people were killed in an explosion at a rally of Imran Khan’s party in Balochistan on Tuesday.
Imran Khan served as prime minister from 2018 to 2022, and was ousted in a no-confidence vote after losing the support of the military.
As opposition leader, he has launched an unprecedented campaign of dissent against senior officials, accusing officials of ousting him in a US-backed conspiracy and plotting to assassinate him. Because of which he was injured in an attack.
Imran Khan was briefly arrested in May. The government used the violent demonstrations in response to his arrest to justify putting pressure on Tehreek-e-Insaf, as a result of which many of the party’s senior leaders have fled or are living in hiding.
