Home Minister Amit Shah faces the challenge of extinguishing domestic fire

In view of the terrorist attack in Reasi, Jammu and the electoral victory of two extremists in Punjab and their increasing influence, it can only be said that India is not yet completely free from terrorism. The wounds of the Manipur violence are still fresh and left wing extremism may have been confined to some remote areas of the country but it has not been completely eradicated.

These are such challenges on which the Home Minister and his team will have to pay special attention. Apart from this, many works of the previous tenure are incomplete. For example, the implementation of UCC, CAA and NRC. Now it is a different matter that they may have to be put on hold due to coalition politics.

Implementation of new laws, including the Indian Judicial Code, which will replace the IPC, CrPC and the Indian Evidence Act, will also be a priority. Then there is the challenge of conducting a national census, which is already delayed by three years. Women’s reservation is another promise that is yet to be fulfilled. All in all, the Home Minister has a long list of tasks to fulfill in his current tenure.

What needs to be done

  • Border Security – In view of the sensitive borders with China and Pakistan, there is a need to strengthen the border infrastructure, whether it is through fencing or the use of advanced surveillance technology like drones and electronic fencing.
  • Left wing extremism Efforts to combat left wing extremism must be intensified through security operations as well as developmental initiatives to establish long term peace and stability
  • Elections in Kashmir and peace restored in Manipur , The removal of Article 370 and granting Jammu and Kashmir the status of a Union Territory has left the state in a dilemma. And especially in view of the renewed terrorist attacks, it is important to hold assembly elections here soon. Similarly, the Centre will have to find a solution to the Manipur issue before it becomes a festering sore.
  • Cyber security – The country not only needs to be protected from increasing cyber threats and attacks, but also needs strong data protection laws to protect personal and national data. Apart from this, dealing with fake news is also no less than a challenge

Who is responsible for this?

Co-operatives

The spirit of cooperation

This ministry came into existence only in 2021, with the aim of harnessing the capabilities of grassroots units i.e. Primary Agricultural Credit Societies (PACS) and transforming them into multipurpose organizations. The purpose is that through these, various needs of the agriculture sector can be met.

What needs to be done

  • PACS to be launched in 2023-24 The digitisation project should be expedited, which includes computerisation of 63,000 active PACS and Wide Area Multipurpose Societies (LAMPS).
  • PACS to all states Encourage the adoption of model bye-laws for the same. This can go a long way in increasing sources of income and creating new employment opportunities.
  • PACS to farmers should be encouraged to use them. They can prove to be important for sharing inputs, farm gate infrastructure and decentralising procurement.
