After the violent storms in large parts of Spain, the number of deaths continues to rise. According to preliminary information, at least 62 people were killed in the Mediterranean region of Valencia alone, as the Spanish state broadcaster RTVE reported, citing the authorities. In Cuenca in the Castile-La Mancha region, an 88-year-old woman was also found dead, according to media reports.
Many people are still missing
Dozens of people were missing. In many places, rescue workers were unable to reach emergency scenes with vehicles due to flooded or otherwise blocked roads.
The weather service Aemet in Valencia spoke of a “historic storm” in its initial assessment. It was the worst “cold drop” (gota fría) of this century in the Valencia region, wrote Aemet on Sea and air and arises when the first Atlantic low foothills push over the warm Mediterranean with cold, moist air.
