On the 5th (local time), the 52nd anniversary of the ‘Munich terrorist attack’, a shooting incident occurred in downtown Munich, Germany.

According to the daily Süddeutsche Zeitung (SZ), at around 9:00 AM that day, an unidentified suspect exchanged gunfire with police near Carolinenplatz in Munich. The police shot and killed the suspect, who was wielding a rifle, at the scene.

Police said the suspect was quickly subdued and there were no other casualties. The suspect was described as an 18-year-old from Austria. Police are searching for explosives in vehicles believed to belong to the suspect. There are reportedly no other suspects involved in the incident.

The Israeli consulate and the Nazi Documentation Center are located 100 meters away from each other at Carolinen Square. The Israeli Foreign Ministry said the consulate was closed when the shooting occurred and that no consulate staff were injured.

The Israeli consulate in Munich was also threatened in late May with a glass bottle containing a bullet. Consul General Talia Radolfrescher said it was “a sign of how dangerous the rising anti-Semitism is.”

German Interior Minister Nancy Feser called the incident a “serious incident” and said “protecting Israeli facilities is our top priority.” Police have stepped up security at Israeli-related facilities, including synagogues in downtown Munich.

This day is the day when the Palestinian terrorist group ‘Black September’ took Israeli athletes hostage in the Olympic village during the 1972 Munich Olympics. At the time, German police responded with a suppression operation, but 11 Israeli nationals, including athletes and coaches, died.

A memorial service to commemorate the 52nd anniversary of the Munich terrorist attack was scheduled to be held at the Fürstenfeldburg Air Force base outside Munich, where the suppression operation at the time failed, but was canceled due to the shooting. It has not yet been revealed whether the shooting is related to the 52nd anniversary of the Munich terrorist attack.
