Anyone who buys a Pixel device actually assumes that new software updates will appear there first. But this probably doesn’t apply to Google. Because even before its own Pixel Watch receives the next major software version, Samsung can use it for its new smartwatches. Pixel fans are surprised.

Samsung is allowed to use Wear OS 4 first

Google hasn’t officially finished Wear OS 4 yet, but Samsung is already allowed to use the brand new smartwatch operating system on the Galaxy Watch 6 and Galaxy Watch 6 Classic. Samsung was probably provided with a final version in advance, which the company was able to adapt with its own interface. At least Google is excited about the launch of Wear OS 4 on the new Samsung watches:

Owners of the Pixel Watch (test) from Google, however, are not so enthusiastic in the replies to the tweet and ask themselves: why Samsung is allowed to use the new software before its own Pixel smartwatches. There is no answer to this yet. People are also wondering whether Wear OS 4 is now final and officially released. Legitimate questions to which no answers are given, at least on Twitter.

Google seems to be using Wear OS 4 just like Wear OS 3 before it initially exclusively on the Galaxy smartwatches from Samsung and the Pixel watches from Google themselves are no exception.

When will Wear OS 4 come to other smartwatches?

In part, smartwatch manufacturers still haven’t released Wear OS 3 for their watches because Samsung has kept its finger on the software for so long with its exclusive deal. The same thing could happen with Wear OS 4. Google presented the operating system at I/O 2023, but it was not yet known when it would appear. So it will be interesting to see whether Google rolls out Wear OS 4 for the first Pixel Watch soon or only with the Pixel Watch 2 in the fall.
