“Love is the foundation of teaching and the beginning of a relationship between teachers and students.” Teacher Guan Quying from the Anglican Church St. Christopher’s Nursery (Kwai Chung) is friendly and lively. Her interactions with the children are full of energy and make people feel warm.
Observe carefully to find out the reasons for students’ depression
Teacher Guan believes that as an educator, the first condition is to have a heart that loves children, which is the foundation of educational work. Teacher Guan especially remembers one day when a child who was usually active was depressed in school and sat aside without saying a word. She immediately realized that the child might be troubled, so she took the initiative to talk to him. After some guidance, the child finally opened up: his father failed to fulfill his promise to go to Disney, which made him feel extremely disappointed and sad. Teacher Guan attaches great importance to the feelings of students, and she immediately called the child’s parents to communicate. Teacher Guan was keenly aware of the child’s abnormality, cared about the child’s emotions, and helped the child rebuild trust in his parents through active communication with the parents. This delicate attention to the child’s emotions is exactly the sincerity and care that Teacher Guan shows in the education process.
In Ms. Guan’s view, education is an ever-changing field, and teachers need to continue learning to meet new challenges. She attaches great importance to the accumulation of professional knowledge and often participates in various teaching and research activities, such as the early childhood education seminar held by the Hong Kong Education University and the Shanghai exchange group. These experiences have helped her master the latest teaching methods and apply them to daily teaching. Ms. Guan emphasized that continuous learning is not only a way to improve her own professional quality, but also a manifestation of responsibility for children, so as to better support their growth.
Teacher Guan also pays attention to integrating cultural education into daily teaching. She shared a story about making glutinous rice balls with the children. Although some children may not be familiar with the production process or have a good grasp of the proportion of materials and fail to make them successfully, they feel happy and satisfied in the process of trying. She will explain Chinese culture in the process. Through such activities, not only can the children experience the charm of traditional Chinese culture, but also cultivate their hands-on ability and teamwork spirit in the process.
Emphasis on teaching by example to bring subtle influence
Teacher Guan firmly believes that “teaching by example is better than teaching by words”. She believes that teachers’ words and deeds have a subtle influence on children. In her daily teaching, she conveys correct values to children through her own behavioral demonstration. For example, she teaches children how to use polite language and how to face and solve problems. These subtle educations are shaping children’s character in a subtle way. Teacher Guan’s educational philosophy and practice fully reflect her love and professionalism for early childhood education. She not only cares for every child with her heart, but also constantly learns to improve her teaching ability, and conveys correct values through her own behavioral demonstration.
