In the round of 16 of the BFV Toto Cup, the Bavarian league team FC Memmingen almost managed a surprise coup against TSV 1860 Munich. The third division team only made it 2-1 in injury time.
Nothing to reproach in terms of fighting spirit
1860 coach Argrios Giannikis, who had reorganized his team after the first third division victory in Ingolstadt, was clearly relieved: “We have now won two difficult games. Now we look ahead to Dresden,” he said, wanting to quickly put the game behind him.
In terms of fighting spirit, the Memmingen team gave it their all in front of 2509 spectators and were accordingly bid farewell by their home fans with much applause.
Alleged compensation does not count
The match plan of keeping the score at zero until half-time with strong defensive work almost worked, but then the ball landed on Patrick Hobsch’s head. FCM keeper Lukas Da Silva Pötzinger looked unhappy when the score was 0:1 (41st minute). In addition to the 19-year-old goalkeeper, FCM coach Matthias Günes also relied on U21 captain Michael Bergmann (20) and Fabian Kroh (18). The average age was 22.5 years.
At the half-time whistle, Memmingen managed to equalize – apparently. There was a heated debate in the stands about why the goal was not counted. A corner from Maximilian Dolinski landed directly in the visitors’ goal. As it turned out, the assistant referee saw the ball go out of play.
Intensity increases
In the second half, the home team became bolder – and consequently they managed to equalize (83rd minute). Captain Lukas Rietzler made an artistic pass to Jakob Gräser, the center back put his foot out and scored the 1:1. The intensity of what had been a fair match up until that point now increased.
In the five minutes of added time, the Sixties finally struck. Captain Jesper Verlaat hammered the ball onto the crossbar. Substitute Fabian Schubert made it 1:2 with the follow-up shot (90.+3).
In the end, the timing and origins are bitter.
Matthias Günes, FCM coach
FCM coach Günes was pleased with his boys’ performance, but also disappointed with the defeat: “In the end, the timing and the way it came about are bitter,” said the 41-year-old after the game and thanked the fans for their support: “That was fun.” The FCM’s next game is on Friday (7 p.m.) with the Bayernliga home game against TSV Landsberg.
