Valencia: 64 dead in a flash flood in Valencia, eastern Spain. Several buildings partially collapsed and vehicles were swept away. Tuesday’s rain flooded parts of south-eastern Spain, stretching from Malaga to Valencia.
This resulted in heavy landslides and floods. Many spent the night in cars waiting for rescuers to arrive. Many trains and flights have been cancelled.
A high-speed train derailed near Malaga with about 300 people on board. No one was reported injured. The high-speed train service between the city of Valencia and Madrid has been disrupted.
A few football matches were also postponed due to inclement weather. Electricity was cut off in about one and a half lakh houses. More than 1,000 troops from Spain’s emergency response units have been deployed to the region.
Mayor Sergio Marin Sanchez said six people were missing in Spain’s autonomous region of Castilla La Mancha. European Parliament President Roberta Metzola said that Europe is ready to help those affected by the disaster. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said that all assistance will be provided to the disaster victims.
