With a 3-0 (1-0) victory in the friendly against Juventus Turin on Friday, 1. FC Nuremberg gained a lot of confidence for the upcoming second division season. Remarkable from the club’s point of view: the oldest of the three goalscorers is 21.
FCN won the friendly match against Juventus Turin in an impressive manner. In front of 33,180 spectators, 1. FC Nuremberg won the last friendly match before the start of the 2nd Bundesliga season 3-0 (1-0) against Juventus FC on Friday, July 26, 2024.
The club started the match well – in the first minute Lukas Schleimer fired the first shot at the visitors’ goal from 20 meters. The Italian Record champions had a lot of possession, but rarely came dangerously into the FCN half.
FCN beats Juve 3-0: Vlahović misses penalty – three young club scorers
Klose’s eleven, on the other hand, kept looking for the finish and took the lead after around 20 minutes, and not undeservedly so. New signing Caspar Jander (21, came from MSV Duisburg) fought for the ball in the opponent’s half, moved into the penalty area and finished with an outside-of-the-foot shot.
Even after that, the club played some good football and had one or two shots on goal, while Reichert in the FCN goal only had to intervene seriously once in the first half.
At half-time, Juve made a complete substitution and seized the initiative. The club defended passionately and was also lucky when Turin’s star striker Dušan Vlahović hit the post with a penalty (72′). In the final phase, FCN played furiously with its youngsters and increased the lead through Dustin Forkel (19) from Coburg and Tim Janisch (18) who was born in Nuremberg.
Knoche’s 40-minute debut
New signing Knoche made his debut for the club and started in central defence alongside Jeltsch. After 40 minutes, Knoche left the field as agreed beforehand and made way for Karafiat. Hofmann started at right back this time, Okunuki came in front of him on the right wing, while Schleimer again occupied the centre of the attack.
Shortly after the break, youngster Forkel replaced Pick on the left wing. A little later, Mathenia replaced Reichert between the posts. This means that Reichert now seems to have the edge in the goalkeeping duel with veteran Christian Mathenia. Before the Juve game, coach Klose had spoken of a duel between equals. Seidel and Tzimas also played for the last half hour. In the closing stages, Valentini, Lubach, Joachims, Sevcik and Janisch were also allowed to play. Hofmann was the only one to play the full 90 minutes.
In addition to the injured Goller and Handwerker, Duman was also missing due to muscular problems. New signing Serra, whose signing was announced on Friday, was not yet in the squad.
The goal sequence:
- 19th minute – 1:0 Jander (assist: Schleimer)
- 87th minute – 2:0 Forkel (Valentini)
- 89th minute – 3:0 Janisch (Hofmann)
Special event: 72nd minute – Vlahovic misses penalty
The FCN line-up: Reichert (61. Mathenia), Hofmann, Jeltsch (61. Seidel), Knoche (39. Karafiat), Soares (77. Valentini), Flick (77. Lubach), Jander (77. Joachims), Castrop (77. Sevcik), Okunuki (61. Tzimas), Schleimer (77. Janisch), Pick (53. Forkel)

The impressive friendly victory came on the same day that a real transfer surprise was announced. As the club announced on Friday, Jan Gyamerah will be moving to 1. FC Kaiserslautern with immediate effect. The move comes as a surprise to many FCN fans, as the right-back was a regular player last season and a candidate for the captain’s armband. Reactions are accordingly divided.
Nuremberg’s new coach Miroslav Klose recently looked back with satisfaction on the training camp at Walchsee in Austria. In an interview, the 46-year-old spoke about training progress, the major transfer Robin Knoche and the Max-Morlock Stadium, which is set to become a “fortress” in the future.
