Users have had the option to set up a PIN in Facebook Messenger since January 2024. How does it work and what does the code do in Messenger?

The function has been gradually activated for users in Facebook Messenger since the beginning of the year. If you have access to it, you will be informed as soon as you open the Facebook chat app. Then you can set up the PIN directly.

How does the PIN work in Facebook Messenger?

With the help of the code you can protect your messages in Messenger so that they cannot be read by others. You can choose either a PIN code or a 40-digit code. The chat history can be saved and transferred to other devices. The third option is to select backup only on the current device. Then the messages only remain on this device and cannot be read from or transferred to other devices.

Tip: If you don’t have the function yet or don’t just want to block the messenger, you can block all installed apps using a PIN code. This is how it works on Android and this is how it works on iOS.

Facebook Messenger: Secure chats with a PIN

If you have dismissed the message after opening Messenger or would like to choose a different option later, you can also set up the Facebook Messenger PIN in the app’s settings:

1. That’s what you open for Facebook in the browser on the PC.
2. Press yours Profile picture at the top rights.
3. Controls the area “Privacy and security“ on.
4. Select the section “End-to-end encrypted chats” out of.
5. Calls the area “Secure storage” on.
6. Take the option “Enable secure storage“.
7. You can then choose whether the messages via PIN or 40-digit code should be secured or remain exclusively on this device.

The setting can currently only be made for the entire messenger. So you can’t just block individual chats using a PIN.
