Wrapped in a thick jacket, the injured match winner Karim Adeyemi was frenetically celebrated from the south stand after Dortmund’s biggest Champions League victory. Fast, eager to play and now also dangerous to score – led by the outstanding and later injured dribbling artist, the Dortmund team clearly showed the limits of the recently highly praised Scottish double winner Celtic Glasgow in a 7:1 (5:1) victory and refined their opening win with a strong performance (3: 0) in Bruges. But Adeyemi’s gala performance was overshadowed by his muscle injury shortly after the break.
Thanks to Adeyemi’s hat-trick (11th/29th/41st) and further goals from Emre Can (7th/penalty), Serhou Guirassy twice (40th/penalty/66th) and Felix Nmecha (79th) before 81 With 365 spectators in the sold-out Dortmund stadium, BVB has established itself in the top group of the reformed competition for the time being and is traveling with plenty of tailwind to the new edition of the last premier class final in two weeks at Real Madrid. BVB had previously achieved their biggest win in the premier class on September 14, 2016 with a 6-0 win in Warsaw.
“It was a special game for me, my first hat trick. Today every shot went in,” Adeyemi said on Amazon Prime and added: “The most important thing is to win. Today we played outstandingly.” Regarding his injury, the striker couldn’t say anything concrete: “I had to come out, my thigh. I hope it’s not that bad. Hopefully I’ll be back quickly.”
He received extra praise from captain Can: “He is rightly player of the game. He played fantastically. Not just today, but also the last few weeks. He plays more mature, more determined. That must be his claim. He’s a good boy, a good player.”
BVB with full-throttle football in the premier class
BVB celebrated big Champions League evenings last season against Paris Saint-Germain, Atlético Madrid and PSV Eindhoven on the way to the final. And the home premiere of the new premier class season continued with full-throttle football. Six goals in the first half and an extremely exhilarating BVB with an outstanding Adeyemi repeatedly brought the spectators out of their seats.
The focus of the initial phase was initially BVB captain Emre Can. After less than a minute, the fans were still very worried when Can was lying on the ground with his leg stretched out. But the international was back quickly and confidently took the lead from the penalty spot. Jamie Gittens had previously won the penalty against Celtic keeper Kasper Schmeichel. But almost in return, Can was partly to blame for the quick equalizer when he headed at Maeda, from whose hip the ball went into the goal.
The hit left no trace for the black and yellow team. Especially not with Adeyemi, who was in great form. The lightning-fast attacker was perfectly staged by Julian Brandt and scored with a deflected shot to take the lead again.
Adeyemi may also be a candidate for the national team again
The 22-year-old has been impressing with strong performances for weeks and would be a candidate for the national team again in this condition. Adeyemi has been waiting for his fifth international appearance for over two years, most recently he distinguished himself with goals and good performances in the U21.
His second goal was particularly worth seeing when he surprised Schmeichel with a brilliant shot from the edge of the penalty area. But that wasn’t enough: it was also Adeyemi who took the penalty for Dortmund’s fourth goal from striker Guirassy and crowned his strong performance with his third goal after a mistake by Maeda.
BVB last managed five goals in the first half on November 22, 2016 in an 8-4 win against Legia Warsaw in the Champions League. Accordingly, the Champions League finalist received a standing ovation.
Adeyemi worries after the break
As brilliantly as Adeyemi had performed in the first 45 minutes, his show ended just as abruptly after the break. After a short sprint, the striker grabbed his thigh and sank to the ground. There is probably a risk of an injury break.
The attacker’s injury initially caused a break in the BVB game, especially since coach Nuri Sahin also took other top performers off the field as a precaution: Pascal Groß, Brandt and Yan Couto.
But striker Guirassy didn’t have enough and did what BVB had brought him in to do. The ex-Stuttgart player scored from close range, scored his sixth goal in his fifth competitive game for Dortmund and was then able to celebrate being substituted. Substitute Nmecha provided the final point.
