Students from Portsmouth High School in the United States visited their sister school, Nichinan Gakuen, for the first time in five years and deepened their friendship.

At the welcome party, Nichinan Gakuen High School Student Council President Shoki Katsume greeted the students in English, saying, “Let’s talk a lot and become the best friends.” Junior high school students from Nichinan Gakuen performed karate and folk songs, and experienced Udo Shrine’s specialty, Undama throwing, deepening their friendship.

Portsmouth High School and Nichinan Gakuen have had exchanges for nearly 30 years, dating back to the diplomat Komura Jutaro, who was born in Obi and signed the Treaty of Portsmouth.

“I was very happy to experience a new culture that I had never experienced before, and the food was delicious. It was fun to have this experience with everyone.”

This October, 12 junior and senior high school students from Nichinan Gakuen will be visiting Portsmouth High School.
