[June 27, KOREA WAVE]A video showing an elderly South Korean man telling an American woman traveling in Seoul to “go on a diet” has been released, sparking public outrage.

The video was released on the YouTube channel “Heecharism,” which has 1.02 million subscribers. In the video released on the 23rd, Yoon Heechul visited Gwangjang Market in Jongno-gu, Seoul with his acquaintance, American female singer Jenna.

The two met some elderly people selling various items, and one of them, speaking in broken English, introduced a diet product and asked Jenna, “Do you want to lose weight?” When Jenna replied, “No,” the man continued speaking.

“Dieting is very easy. Lose 5kg in one month, lose 30kg in six months. Diet, very easy, come on, very pretty.”

Yoon, who was watching what was happening, tried to go somewhere else, but the man stopped her, saying, “Miss, you have to do this. Come over here. Aren’t you going to lose weight?”

When Jenna answered “I won’t reduce it,” the man made a rude remark, saying, “The burden on the Earth is heavy, the Earth is heavy.”

Yoon said, “They say it without realizing it’s rude,” while Jenna laughed, “They’re just trying to make money. It can’t be helped.” She added, “In America, if you tell a stranger to ‘go on a diet,’ you’ll get into trouble, but in Korea, they’ll casually say, ‘You’ll be pretty if you lose weight.'”

Internet users who saw this left comments such as, “This is truly a disgrace to the country,” “How can you tell someone who’s never done it before to go on a diet?” and “I’m ashamed to be a fellow Korean.”
