Duksung Women’s University’s (President Kim Geon-hee) Climate and Environment Crisis Response Team (Director Kim Jong-gil) held the ‘2024 Summer’ event at Room 203, Dae-lecture Building, Duksung Women’s University on Thursday, December 19 of last year in order to foster global talent with both climate crisis response capabilities and practical skills. ‘Climate Journey to Winter’ was held.
This event was held in the order of the performance report and disbandment ceremony of the ‘2024 Summer Climate Protection Expedition’ and the launch ceremony of the ‘2024 Winter Climate Protection Expedition’.
A total of 19 students in 6 teams who participated in the summer expedition shared what they experienced in various tourist destinations such as Busan, Japan, Hong Kong, and Australia during the last summer vacation, as well as major local issues and action plans for a carbon-neutral society.
Following the summer expedition, 51 students from 22 teams selected for the winter expedition are scheduled to explore Incheon, Wando, Taiwan, the United States, Singapore, Switzerland, and the United Arab Emirates for a month in January 2025.
The ‘Climate Protection Expedition’ was first implemented in the second semester of the 2023 school year as part of the humanities and social science convergence talent training project supported by the Ministry of Education and the National Research Foundation of Korea, and was hosted by Duksung Women’s University and supported by five consortiums in the field of ‘coexistence and coexistence in the era of climate crisis’. This is a program in which universities (Kookmin University, Duksung Women’s University, Inha University, Ulsan University, and Chosun University) participate.
The ‘Climate Protection Expedition’ selection team consists of 1 to 5 people, investigates the damage to the climate environment in the area visited, and seeks solutions to the climate crisis in cooperation with universities, public institutions, companies, and civic groups in the region.
Ha Ji-eun (majoring in political diplomacy) at Duksung Women’s University, who participated in the summer climate protection expedition, said, “Visiting Australia was ‘a time to redefine my relationship with nature.’ “Looking at Australian society, where actions to coexist with nature are commonplace, I reflected on the generous eco-friendly activities in Korea and came to place myself and nature on an equal footing,” he said.
Kwon Do-yeon (Kookmin University AI Big Data Convergence Management Department), who visited Busan, said, “I saw new upcycling works created with discarded scrap metal and home appliances at the Resource Circulation Cooperation Center and Beachcombing Craft Workshop, and I experienced the entire process of making upcycling products myself.” “It was meaningful and special,” he said, adding, “The experience of creating work using trash made me feel surprised and proud at the same time.”
Through this program, Duksung Women’s University plans to continuously support students to develop practical climate crisis response capabilities and develop their qualities as global leaders.
