October 1st marked the 60th anniversary of the opening of the Tokaido Shinkansen, “Japan’s main artery,” and a departure ceremony was held at Shin-Osaka Station.

The Tokaido Shinkansen has celebrated its 60th anniversary since its start of operation. Many people visited Shin-Osaka Station from early in the morning.

“It’s very emotional, like I was witnessing a page in history.”
“I sometimes wonder if it’s been that long already. I hope they continue to do their best.”

The Tokaido Shinkansen opened on October 1, 1964, in time for the Tokyo Olympics. It connected Tokyo and Shin-Osaka in 4 hours, compared to the previous 6 hours and 30 minutes, making Tokyo within day trip distance and earning it the nickname “Dream Super Express.” It is now possible to travel between Tokyo and Shin-Osaka in 2 hours and 21 minutes, and the number of trains running per day has increased to more than six times the original number.
