“Don’t kill the medical workers who save lives”
This is a heartbreaking message from a Japanese doctor working for a United Nations organization that continues to provide humanitarian aid in Gaza, the Palestinian Authority.
On the 28th, Akihiro Kiyota, Director-General of Health at UNRWA (United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees), which continues to provide humanitarian assistance in Gaza, held a press conference in Tokyo and complained that “a collapse of human dignity is occurring in Gaza.”
UNRWA Akihiro Kiyota Health Director-General
“There is something of a collapse of human dignity that is happening here, where people have to survive searching for things they can use even in garbage bags.It is truly unacceptable that over 800 health care workers have been killed.Hospitals were bombed by airstrikes.” I can’t allow this to happen. I want you to stop bombing organizations that depend on our lives.”
In Israel, parliament passed a new law banning UNRWA’s operations in the country. If the law goes into effect in January next year as planned, it will have an immeasurable impact on the humanitarian situation in Gaza, as it will severely restrict the movement of UN staff, including Dr. Kiyota, and the importation of humanitarian aid supplies.
Dr. Kiyota
“The UN’s position is fixed, and there is no other organization other than UNRWA to support Gaza.In my health field, (UNRWA) has 1,000 people working on it, but I can’t ask the WHO, which only has 40 employees, to do it.” thing”
Dr. Kiyota expressed a sense of crisis, saying, “There is no organization that can replace UNRWA,” and emphasized the importance of international public opinion and the efforts of governments around the world toward Israel in order to continue its activities.
