DL E&C announced on the 30th that it had created and operated an ‘urban apiary’ at a domestic construction site to restore the bee ecosystem. It is the first domestic construction company to create an urban apiary at a construction site to preserve biodiversity.
Bees are insects directly related to human survival. Of the 100 largest crops, which account for 90% of the world’s food, more than 70% are produced through the pollination activities of bees. However, due to global warming, pesticide pollution, and urbanization, the bee population has recently plummeted worldwide, putting the ecosystem in serious danger.
DL E&C established and began operating an urban apiary at a construction site in the metropolitan area last May to participate in activities to restore the bee ecosystem. Field staff wore beekeeping hats and work clothes and periodically inspected the beehives (bee hives) within the hives. To prevent mites from forming in the hive, we not only sprayed chemicals one by one, but also ran to catch wasps when they appeared, taking care of them with great care.
DL E&C created the queen bee ‘Bongsuni’ character to encourage all field employees to participate in environmental protection activities. The friendly image of Bongsoon’s character was attached to the waste disposal site, recycling center, and wheel washing area at the site and asked people to ‘actively participate in environmental protection to protect Bongsoon.’
DL E&C’s field staff, who operated an urban apiary for about four months, personally harvested about 11 kg of natural honey early this month. The honey collected in this way was made into cool honey water and delivered to field workers who were overcoming the midsummer heat for their health.
A field employee in charge of managing the urban apiary said, “At first, I thought, ‘Will bees be able to get along well at a construction site?’ But I was able to feel the wonder of nature as I saw their power growing faster than expected.” “It was an opportunity to resolve that we should conduct more thorough on-site management to protect the diverse natural ecosystem.”
DL E&C has been consistently carrying out ‘Sharing Sunny’ activities to protect the environment as part of ESG (Environment, Society, Governance) management.
First, at the headquarters, employees participate in the ‘Carbon Footprint Reduction Campaign’, which implements guidelines for reducing carbon in daily life in conjunction with Jongno-gu Office. We are also carrying out a company-wide ‘Paper Cup Zero Activity’ with the goal of reducing the use of approximately 620,000 disposable products per year. A project to convert all corporate vehicles to electric vehicles by 2030 is also underway. This year, we launched a new campaign in which executives and employees directly grow seedlings in their offices and homes and deliver them to the forest.
At sites across the country, including the headquarters, we are regularly promoting the ‘Create 1 Mountain, 1 Thousand, 1 Street’ activity to purify the surrounding environment in cooperation with local governments. In particular, about 100 executives and employees voluntarily visit Yeoui Saetgang Ecological Park in Yeouido, Seoul every year to protect otter habitats and take care of the park.
DL E&C plans to actively consider expanding the urban apiary within the construction site, which was first pilot operated this year, to other sites.
A DL E&C official said, “For corporate sustainable management, environmental protection and ecosystem preservation are essential, not optional,” and added, “We will continue to strive to fulfill the corporate social responsibility by strengthening ESG management.”
