Kathmandu: The death toll from floods and landslides in neighboring Nepal has reached 170, officials said. The report in this regard was released by the Ministry of Home Affairs of Nepal on Sunday. Home Ministry spokesperson Rishiram Tiwari released the latest information on floods and landslides affecting various districts, including the capital Kathmandu, on Sunday, Himalayan Times reported.
The ministry confirmed on Sunday that 111 people were injured in the disasters and nearly 4,000 people were rescued. Search, rescue and relief operations have been intensified with the deployment of security agencies, Himalayan Times reported. Nepali Army helicopters rescued 162 injured or stranded people in Kawre, Sindhuli and Lalitpur districts. The injured are undergoing treatment.
In a press conference, the ministry informed that hydropower plants and irrigation facilities in Nepal have been severely damaged due to floods and landslides caused by continuous rains in recent days.
15 hydroelectric plants under construction have also been damaged. Electricity supply has been interrupted in various parts of the country due to damaged power plants and transmission lines. Nepal Electricity Authority Managing Director Kulman Gisingh said managing the country’s electricity demand in the coming winter will be challenging as it takes time to repair damaged power plants.
The Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport said in a statement that 47 of Nepal’s 80 national highways were blocked.
