Dallas ∙ Dallas County Health and Human Services reports the first case of West Nile virus in Dallas this year. The Dallas native was diagnosed with West Nile Non-Neuroinvasive Disease.
Meanwhile, the Garland Public Health Department has confirmed two more cases of the disease. One is a local and the other is a tourist. Both have recovered from the disease, DCHS said.
The virus is transmitted to humans by mosquitoes belonging to the genus Culex. This is more than previous years and it is very important for people to take precautions to protect themselves from mosquito bites, DCHS Director Dr. Philip Huang said.
Officials also said to use DEET or other EPA-approved mosquito repellants and insecticides, wear light-colored, long, loose-fitting clothing that covers the body, avoid standing water, and limit time spent outdoors when mosquitoes are most active, especially between dusk and dawn.
