On this day, at the presidential office in Yongsan, Seoul, Aide Poyar told President Yoon, “The Czech Republic is confident that it will sign a final contract with Korea for the construction of the Dukovany nuclear power plant.” This is interpreted as a statement confirming the Czech Republic’s will in a situation where Westinghouse, an American nuclear power company, has put the brakes on Korea’s export of nuclear power plants to the Czech Republic.

President Yoon responded, “The Czech government’s selection of ‘Team Korea’ as the preferred negotiating partner for the construction of the new Dukovany nuclear power plant, one of the largest investment projects in Czech history, last July demonstrates the firm will of both countries to strengthen Korea-Czech cooperation.” He added, “I hope that through my visit to the Czech Republic scheduled for this month, we will be able to further strengthen the Korea-Czech strategic partnership established in 2015 and achieve concrete results in expanding mutually beneficial cooperation between our two countries.”

“I came to Korea to make practical preparations for (President Yoon’s) visit to the Czech Republic in September,” said Aide Poyar. “The Czech government hopes to strengthen comprehensive cooperation with Korea not only in the nuclear power sector but also in industry, investment, defense, transportation, and research and development (R&D).”

The Czech government selected the Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) consortium as the preferred bidder for the project to build two 1,000-megawatt nuclear power plants in the Dukovany region in July. The project size is approximately 24 trillion won.
