The best strategy game of all time is coming back. Age of Mythology: Retold is the remake of an absolute classic that every genre fan must play. We have already played it and can hardly wait for the release.

22 years ago my absolute favorite strategy game was released: Age of Mythology. Why is it so special? It has the strategic depth of Age of Empires but complements it Fire giants, titans and lightning stormsthat you can unleash on your enemies.

The RTS will receive a remake this year, which those who pre-ordered the premium edition were able to play at the weekend. This first beta doesn’t show the full game, but it does provide one good first impression of what awaits players on September 4th, 2024.

Age of Mythology Retold: These are the new features

In Age of Mythology Retold you immediately notice that the graphics are… big step forward made it – but it also seems a bit more comic-like. The jump is particularly noticeable in the mythical units. Units like the Hydra, Frost Giant or Sphinx look fantastic.

The gameplay has remained largely unchanged. Fans of the original or Age of Empires will find their way around immediately. But there are occasional cases new units, buildings and upgradeswhich makes the remake feel a little fresher and there are new tactics that want to be tried out.

The biggest change, however, concerns the population limit. You can now much larger armies However, it also requires more villagers to obtain resources. The whole game becomes a little more hectic, but also much more spectacular. A good decision, as armies in the original were a bit puny.

The last big change concerns divine spells. They can now be used multiple times, but they cost divine favor after the first use. This also makes them Battles much more dynamic and you can no longer feel safe after your opponent has used their strongest attack once.

Age of Mythology: Retold isn’t finished yet

The Age of Mythology remake already makes a good impression, but there is still room for improvement. The wayfinding is particularly striking. Units often get stuck on vegetation and buildings – this is particularly annoying when your villagers stand around stupidly instead of collecting resources.

The entire user interface is also very functional and not exactly pretty. This particularly affects menus and lobbies. A real regression is also available in the synchronization of the campaign missions. The English speakers sound very wooden, we haven’t been able to get an impression of the German speakers yet.

All in all, Age of Mythology: Retold promises to be a successful remake. We can see the final version on September 4, 2024 convince when Age of Mythology: Retold appears on Steam and for the Xbox Series X|S.
