Colombian President: We will cut ties with Israel because of ‘genocide’ in Gaza

Gustavo Pietro, President of Colombia

Gustavo Petro, the president of Colombia, said today, May 1 (Thor 12), that he is cutting diplomatic ties with Israel, a move that Israel called “anti-Semitic”.

The President of Colombia said that this action will be taken because of the “genocide” by the leader of Israel in Gaza. Petro added: “Tomorrow (Thursday) diplomatic relations with the State of Israel will be severed…”

Peter said that Benjamin Netanyahu, the Prime Minister of Israel, has started “genocide” in Gaza.

The President of Colombia is one of the critics of Israel’s attack on Gaza after the October 7th attack by Hamas on Israel. According to Israeli officials, 1,170 people were killed in the attack by Hamas.

After that, Israel started retaliatory attacks, according to the health authorities of Gaza, more than 34,500 people have been killed so far. Most of the victims of these campaigns are women and children.

In his address to his thousands of supporters, some of whom were chanting slogans in support of the Palestinians, President Colombia said that the world cannot accept the genocide of all the people of one region. And he said: “If Palestine dies, humanity dies.”

In response, Israel called the President of Colombia “anti-Semitic” and his action “hateful” and said that if he stands, it will be a “reward” to Hamas.

Israel Katz, Israel’s foreign minister, wrote on the social network X: “The president of Colombia promised to reward the murderers and aggressors of Hamas – and he did it today.”

Katz added that history will remember President Colombia for this position.

A few days after the 7th of October attack by Hamas, the President of Colombia criticized the Minister of Defense of Israel and said that his statements against the people of Gaza would be similar to the statements made by the German Nazis about the Jews. In response, Israel will stop “security exports” to the country.

At that time, Israel accused the President of Colombia of supporting the “atrocities of the terrorist Hamas and igniting anti-Semitism” and summoned Ambassador N. Kishor. Then, Bogota expelled Ambassador Israel.

Petro said that “democratic people cannot allow the revival of Nazism in international politics”.

Following the death of hundreds of Palestinians while waiting for food, the President of Colombia suspended the purchase of arms to Israel. Colombia is one of the main buyers of Israeli weapons.

Colombia has historically had strong diplomatic and military ties with Israel and the United States.

In addition to Brazil, this child also supported the complaint of South Africa against Israel in the International Court of Justice.
