As tensions in the region increase due to North Korea’s deployment of troops to Russia and the launch of a new intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), the foreign ministers of North Korea and Russia met in Moscow on the 1st (local time). North Korean Foreign Minister Choe Son-hui said North Korea would stick to its policy of strengthening its nuclear power.

According to AFP and Sputnik, Foreign Minister Choi, who visited Moscow, Russia, said this after meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.

Foreign Minister Choi said, “North Korea’s State Affairs Commission Chairman Kim Jong-un made it clear the day before that considering future threats and challenges to us, we need to strengthen our modern nuclear response posture more than ever,” adding, “We have a policy of strengthening nuclear forces under any circumstances.” “I assure you that I will not change it,” he said. At the same time, he claimed that the United States and its allies have recently made the security of the Korean Peninsula unstable, and that the situation could turn into an explosive situation at any time.

Regarding the situation in Ukraine, Foreign Minister Choi said, “I have no doubt that under the leadership of Russian President Vladimir Putin, the Russian military and people will surely achieve a great victory in the war to protect the country’s sovereignty and security.” He added, “We are confident of victory.” “We will always stand by our Russian comrades until the day we die,” he emphasized.

“Very close cooperation has been achieved between the military and security services of Russia and North Korea,” said Minister Lavrov. “Through this, we can effectively solve important security issues for the citizens of both countries.” He added, “Russia is very grateful for North Korea’s principled stance on the incident that occurred in Ukraine.”

The two did not comment separately on reports of North Korea sending troops to Russia. However, amid speculation that the deployment of North Korean troops dispatched to support the Russian military is imminent, it is expected that the two will discuss the issue of troop deployment and joint responses to the U.S. presidential election during today’s meeting.

Prior to the meeting, Minister Lavrov and Foreign Minister Choi visited Yaroslavsky Train Station in Moscow and attended the unveiling ceremony of a plaque commemorating President Kim Il-sung’s visit to the Soviet Union in 1949.

Foreign Minister Choi departed from Pyongyang on the 28th of last month and arrived in Moscow on the 30th for his official visit to Russia.
