Last week, Chinese authorities announced their policy regarding the application of “crimes of secession” and other charges against “Taiwan independence advocates.”

At a press conference, Zhu Fenglian, spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, which is responsible for China’s Taiwan policy, reiterated her criticism of Taiwan’s Lai Ching-te administration, saying it “stubbornly maintains the position of Taiwan independence.”
He emphasized that the new policy is “targeted at some ‘staunch Taiwan independence advocates'” and that it is aimed at the Lai Ching-te administration.
Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs
“Severely punishing some die-hard Taiwan independence activists who maliciously preach ‘independence’ and frequently engage in ‘independence’ activities in accordance with the law is a necessary measure to truly safeguard peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait and actually safeguard the interests and welfare of our compatriots in Taiwan.”
On the other hand, Zhu also emphasized that the policy “is not targeted at ordinary Taiwanese people, so there is no need to worry.”
