The Chinese Communist Party has decided to expel former Defense Minister Li Shangfu and his predecessor, former Defense Minister Wei Fenghe, from the party for “serious violations of discipline.” They are expected to be indicted on suspicion of bribery in the future.
According to China’s state-run CCTV, the Communist Party of China’s Central Politburo meeting on the 27th announced the decision to expel former Defense Minister Li Shangfu and his predecessor, Wei Fenghe, from the party due to “suspicions of bribery.”
The two have been transferred to the military prosecution service and are expected to be indicted in the future.
When former Defense Minister Ri Sang-bok was dismissed from his post last year, he was accused of corruption in equipment procurement.
At a meeting of military leaders held this month, President Xi Jinping ordered stronger crackdowns on corruption, but it is unusual for a former minister to face such a severe punishment as expulsion from the party, suggesting the severity of corruption within the Chinese military.
