China is launching an anti-dumping investigation into Canadian rapeseed (a raw material for canola oil) in response to Canada’s 100% tariff on Chinese electric vehicles.
A spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Commerce stated in a response to a reporter’s question posted on their website on the 3rd, “We firmly oppose the discriminatory and unilateral restrictions adopted by Canada on Chinese products,” and added that the rapeseed industry in China continues to suffer losses due to unfair competition.
According to the Department of Commerce, Canadian rapeseed exports to China increased 170% year-on-year to $3.47 billion last year, while prices in China continued to fall.
China also plans to launch an anti-dumping investigation into related Canadian chemical products.
The Commerce Department said it would “take all necessary measures to safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese companies,” and also mentioned plans to file a complaint with the World Trade Organization (WTO) dispute settlement body.
Earlier, Bloomberg News reported, citing sources, that Canada would impose a 100% tariff on Chinese electric vehicles and a 25% tariff on steel and aluminum. Canada’s measures are seen as an attempt to align with Western allies such as the United States and the European Union (EU), which have announced additional tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles.
