Li Hui, the Chinese government’s special representative for Eurasian affairs, who is in charge of mediating diplomacy regarding Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, visited Brazil on July 29 and met with Brazilian Presidential Chief of Staff Amorim and other senior government officials. They agreed to work together to promote the independent proposal jointly announced by China and Brazil for a political solution to the Ukraine crisis. The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced this on August 1.

Li is also scheduled to visit South Africa and Indonesia, aiming to expand support for the independent proposal among emerging and developing countries in the “Global South.”

During the meeting, Li said that over 110 countries had responded positively to his proposal, and stated, “We want to work with Brazil to push forward with a political solution to the Ukraine crisis.” Brazil reportedly responded, “We want to work with China to advance our own proposal in order to build up the conditions for a political solution.” (Kyodo News)
