Chaliyar as a heartbreaking sight: 20 dead bodies and body remains recovered

Nilambur (Malappuram): Dismembered human bodies, motionless children’s bodies, limbs… The sight of the bodies of those who were caught in the landslide in Wayanad’s Mundakai after reaching Nilambur after traveling kilometers in the torrent of Chaliyar is heartbreaking for anyone. So far 20 dead bodies have been recovered from Chaliyar river in Malappuram district.

The dead bodies were recovered from various ghats in Pothukal panchayat limits. The dead bodies have been recovered from the jetties of Utchi Kuthi, Ambuttan Poti, Kunipala, Machikai, Bhudanam, Vellilamad and Munderi Kampi Palam.

At 7.30 in the morning, the body of a three-year-old toddler was found first from Kunipala. According to the count till noon, 20 dead bodies were recovered from the banks of Chaliyar from various places in Pothukal panchayat. Seven dead bodies were shifted to Nilambur district hospital after the inquest process was completed. The inquest proceedings of the four bodies are going on.

Search and rescue operations are in progress at various piers under the leadership of the police and fire forces.
